Extruding filament to the floor works, but it can be finicky.  You need a clear, clean space for it to coil, and the positions of the guide, fan, and extruder need to be just right.  Then when the job is done you have to mount a spool on a drill to wind it up.

With the FilaWinder you can spool your filament as it extrudes, keeping it off the floor. Mount the Filastruder and FilaWinder on a wall, on a shelf, or on a workbench to keep your filament production out of the way.   The filament follows a steady, unchanging path from extruder to winder making it easy to produce professional quality filament for hours without worry.

Features:

Closed Loop Control -  A sensor detects the position of the filament and adjusts the speed of the winder so it is never too fast or too slow.  No matter how much the spool fills up or the speed of extrusion changes, the winder keeps the filament on a steady path.

Constant Tension - The filament needs to stretch as it winds on to the spool so it stays tight and resists tangles. Running the filament through a loop of PTFE tube provides just enough pinch to keep it neatly coiled.

Filament Guide - An active guide spreads the filament evenly across the spool so it doesn’t bunch up in the middle. The user can easily set the guide’s range of motion to match any size of spool.

Universal Spool Mounting - The FilaWinder can accommodate a wide range of spools whether they come from filament suppliers or are home made.

Upgradeable - The custom designed electronics are based on an Arduino Nano, and all unused pins are made available on expansion headers.   This makes future upgrades possible such as an LCD, counter, or filament width measurement.

Required Tools -

  • 2.5mm Allen Wrench, or ball tipped hex driver (recommended)
  • Small Phillips Screwdriver
  • Tiny standard screwdriver (i.e. eyeglasses screwdriver)
